Food Not Bombs is a community grassroots initiative. It is simply a bunch of folks coming together to cook and share a meal with the community.
Here in London we do two servings a month: the second Saturday of the month at Dundas St. and Richmond St. at the Southwest corner in front the McDonalds at 6:00 pm and the last Sunday of the month at the East Village Arts Co-op located at 757 Dundas St. at 6:00 pm.
The Process:
-We gather donations the day before and day of each serving from the Covenant Garden Market and the Western Fair Market. These donations are usually goods that vendors are unable to sell and would normally be put to waste without the intervention of Food Not Bombs
-Around 5 hours before our serving time is when we start to cook. We make our menus up on the spot!
-From the start of cooking to the end of the serving we are continuously cleaning.
-Around 20 minutes before our serving we start setting up at our serving location.
-We serve the meal as well as hand out groceries at our serving time.
-Then repeat the next time!
The Principles:
1. The food is always vegan or vegetarian and free to everyone without restriction.
2. Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders or headquarters, and every group is autonomous and makes decisions by consensus.
3. Food Not Bombs is dedicated to nonviolent direct action and works for nonviolent social change.
